Star Wars: Halcyon Dawn
If Halcyon is paradise, Shaddoth is surely a hell. Generations ago, the planet was enveloped in a large-scale planetary bombardment which reduced the vast civilization of the Shadiq to a radioactive mass of rubble. Only Alamut, the vaunted city of masks survived the holocaust. However, the Shadiq continue their games of cloak and dagger still fighting with one another of the scraps of power left in the wake of the massive attack. The city of masks however bears no scars from the war. Beautiful and filled with shadows, the city offers exotic sights and wonders unmatched by anything in the outer-rim. Spires and canals criss-cross the surface of the ancient city. However, beneath the frescoes of beauty, lies a dangerous heart. The city has the highest murder rate in the outer-rim territories. In addition, it serves as a home to all of the factions plying for power in the sector. To cut down on collateral damage, Moff Zhann has decreed that no foreign vessel may dock without sponsorship (and protection) from an interest within the city. Unaccounted for variables could drastically alter the tenuous balance of power that has thus far spared the city the fate of the rest of the planet. The order of the four pillars makes their home within the city, contemplating the void. In addition, the city houses the largest slave market in the galaxy. Every year, a great sabbacc tournament is held during festival – the winner of which is awarded a vast fortune.
Life outside of Alamut is harsh. The few scattered communities must brave the radioactive wastes, attacks by swoop gangs, and roving Ghouls – those members of the Shadiq who survived the bombardment and lost their minds in the process. Justice therefore is brutal, meted out by the Freemen – a group championed by an ex-republic commander called Corin Fox. Fox has built a small settlement in the shadow of Alamut called freeport – he promises fair trade and equal treatment to any who find themselves within the borders of the port. However, any who seek to undermine him or his laws are quickly dispatched. Fox maintains a stable relationship with both the Shadiq and the Imperial forces who seem content to let him labor in the wastes so long as his interests do not conflict with their own.
Shaddoth also is the primary source of Orcalium in the system and is thus mined by the forces of the Halcyon Trade Consortium and sold to the Imperials. Labor in the mines is supplemented with prisoners of the Umbrian Correctional Facility and overseen and protected by Imperial troops.
