Star Wars: Halcyon Dawn
Freeport is built upon the wreckage of an ancient city that was inhabited up to and including the scourging of Shaddoth primarily by slaves. Because Alamut’s slave market is the largest in the galaxy, and because space is limited in the city, it quickly became apparent that the vast numbers of slaves would have to be processed and held in a separate location before being taken to market. Thus, Alaam, the city of chains was founded by the early Shadiq. Countless generations of slaves suffered at the hands of their cruel overseers. Chained in darkness these wretched souls could do little to avoid their fate. After the scouring of Shaddoth, and the occupation of the system by the forces of the Republic, the city feel into disuse due to the republic’s anti-slavery stance. While the slaves in the city of Alaam were set free, the slave trade within the city of Alamut continued. Thus the city sat abandoned for well over 100 years, serving as nothing but nesting grounds for mynoc. This changed two years ago when Corrin Fox and the crew of the Foxtrot found their way to the city. Quickly, the crew began using the area as a base for their trading operations. Soon, the denizens of the Grey Wastes began joining Fox and his crew in the area. Fox was happy to have his base watched over while off-world. Soon other freighter captains began calling the canyon home. This was the beginning of the settlement. After weathering attacks from Ghuuls and other roving gangs, Fox began recruiting a volunteer militia called the Freemen.
Thus, the “city” of Freeport is less of a city and more of a cooperative community attempting to weather the storms of the Grey Wastes of Shaddoth. Built upon the ruins of the ancient city of salves, the denizens of Freeport have used the geography, previous structures, as well as the scraps of the waste to create a fortification capable of fending off most attacks by gangs of raiders or roving Ghuuls. The city is built into a recessed canyon with a narrow entrance ending in a wall of sheer cliffs. The entrance to the canyon is flanked by statuary created by the slaves of old depicting slaves in various positions of suffering. Chains and scrap metal wreckage have been strong across the entrance to form a makeshift wall which serves to repel potential invaders. Within the canyon, the same found materials have been linked together to form a complex network of elevated platforms and catwalks connected by the chains which once served to hold salves prisoner. Only the vault at the end of the canyon has yet to be explored, and this only because the door has not yet been able to be opened. The community of Freeport exists to assist folks in their survival. However, it should be noted that this assistance does not come free. While credits are of little use in the wastes, the community is able to thrive due to a barter and gift economy. The various powers within the city are watched over and kept in check by the Freemen. To make one’s home in Freeport is to share the fruits of one’s labors. In times of crisis the whole of the community comes together to repel attackers. There is a pervasive feeling of everyone being “in the wastes together.” But, one can only wonder how long such a community will be allowed to last in its current state. Though the fortifications of the city do their job in repelling the odd raiding attempt or Ghuul incursion there would be very little defense against an organized assault of modern troops.
